The Illinois High School Association will postpone the state championship football games scheduled for Illinois State University on Saturday because of the impending snowstorm forecasted for the state. Illinois State University will close its campus on Saturday because of the incoming storm.

The scheduled games involved Providence and Wheaton St. Francis in Class 5A, East St. Louis and Fenwick in Class 6A, St. Rita and Brother Rice in Class 7A and Mount Carmel and Oswego in Class 8A.

A significant winter storm is set to hit northern Illinois this weekend, with the National Weather Service upgrading its alert to a Winter Storm Warning from 3 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters say the region should prepare for 6 to 10 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible northwest of a line from Ottawa to Aurora to Waukegan.

The Class 5A/6A games have been rescheduled for Tuesday night at Illinois State University. The 5A game will be played at 3 p.m. between Wheaton St. Francis and Providence and the 6A game will be played at 6 p.m. between East St. Louis and Fenwick.

The 7A/8A games have not been officially rescheduled with the IHSA indicating that they hope to have the game details settled some time on Saturday evening.

According to an IHSA press release:

The IHSA is still in the process of rescheduling the Class 7A (Brother Rice vs. St. Rita) and Class 8A (Mt. Carmel vs. Oswego) championship games, with the intention of playing the games on either Wednesday, December 3 or Thursday, December 4.

“There are still some logistical hurdles to clear in regard to the rescheduling of the Class 7A and 8A games,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “It is our intention to have that finalized by Saturday (Nov. 29) evening. We appreciate the patience and support of the competing schools and our partners at ISU and in Bloomington-Normal as we navigate this unprecedented situation.”
